Achieve, Heal and Discover Issue #7

Achieve: Understand your circle of competence

Do you want a verified way to fail?

Be a fish in a tree climbing competition.

This is playing against others that have aptitudes that you don’t have. In a letter to his investors, Warren Buffet defines this as outside of your circle of competence.

If you want to achieve great things, you have to function within your circle of competence.

Circle of Competence is drawn out through our experience or study and it builds up useful knowledge on certain areas of the world.

If you want to improve your odds of success in life and business define the perimeter of your circle of competence, and operate inside of it. Over time, work to expand that circle but never be afraid to say “I don’t know.”

Heal: How to Detach from pain

I just finished a short book called Tuesdays with Morrie. It is a book where a man is dying from ALS and he teaches life lessons to his former student.

I am not going to lie, I cried at the end.

One of the most impacting lessons was that of Detachment. Here is a quote from the book:

"If you hold back on the emotions—if you don’t allow yourself to go all the way through them—you can never get to being detached, you’re too busy being afraid. You’re afraid of the pain, you’re afraid of the grief. You’re afraid of the vulnerability that loving entails. “But by throwing yourself into these emotions, by allowing yourself to dive in, all the way, over your head even, you experience them fully and completely. You know what pain is. You know what love is. You know what grief is. And only then can you say, ‘All right. I have experienced that emotion. I recognize that emotion. Now I need to detach from that emotion for a moment.

Discover: Therapist are going extinct

I went viral on twitter last week.

I wrote a thread that gathered tens of thousands impressions, comments, etc.

It hit a nerve, especially with other therapists because many of us are feeling the same way.

Here is the summary:

Some of the best mental health professionals are burning out fast due to:

  1. 2020+ has been the Armageddon for therapists
  2. Venture Capitalists want to enslave therapist
  3. New legislation stripped away our ethics

Here are some solutions to how therapist can strive right now:

  1. We have to move away from social isolation and surround ourselves by support.
  2. Our newest graduating clinicians are getting swallowed up by managed care and venture capitalist. Let’s create safe havens for new therapists to avoid their burnout.
  3. Therapist have to write online to give ourselves the opportunity to heal, learn and create new platforms to connect with our community.

Take care!
